Thirteen days following the discovery of the naked and bruised body of Iris Coëtmen, 23, adrift in a coastal river in Lanester, near Lorient, the public prosecutor of Lorient has just confirmed the arrest, by the judicial police , of a “man in his fifties and from the country of Lorient”, this Thursday morning. This man is currently in custody at the Lorient police station.
Nine years in prison for rape
He is not one of the three men with whom the young woman had been seen closing a bar in Lorient around 3:30 a.m. on the night of her disappearance, Saturday May 27. One of them, Iris’ brother-in-law, had been placed in police custody, a few hours following the discovery of the body, in order to cross-check the course of the evening. He was released 24 hours later.
According to our information, the man arrested this Thursday, originally from Hennebont, is unfavorably known to the courts, in particular for cases of sexual assault and theft. According to our information, he was notably sentenced for rape, to nine years in prison. He had been released a few years ago.
The suspect’s partner was also taken into police custody, according to another source familiar with the matter, as AFP specifies, without specifying the reasons.
Video protection of the sub-prefecture
This rebound occurs thanks to the exploitation of video protection images of the sub-prefecture of Lorient. The investigators discovered a scene there where we can see Iris Coëtmen lying on the ground, the night of May 27. We also see a man who approaches her, goes around the body and ends up moving it. A few minutes later, a white van appears in the same area. The investigators, by crossing the file of the owners of white utilities and the automated judicial file of the perpetrators of sexual and violent offenses (Fijais) were able to identify a man. It is this man who was arrested this Thursday morning. For the moment, there is no element filtering on the police custody of this man. According to our sources, no other decisive element has been discovered at the time of writing these lines. Sifting through the 50-year-old’s vehicle, which was seized, might provide valuable information.
Van: a troubling precedent
This development echoes a disturbing story reported to Lorient police by another young woman a month ago. She had assured that she had no memory of an evening, very alcoholic, that she had spent in town. But she claimed to have woken up in a van, and evoked a kidnapping. For the time being, no link has been established between these two cases.
The prosecutor of the Republic of Lorient announces that he will communicate at the end of the police custody of the fifties, Friday evening, and evokes, “if necessary”, a possible press conference Monday June 12, in the ‘followingnoon.
The case is the subject of a judicial investigation once morest X for “kidnapping, voluntary homicide qualified as murder, preceded or accompanied by rape” and is entrusted to an investigating judge of the criminal center of Lorient.
