(CNN) Prosecutors in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, announced on the 16th that a 68-year-old man has been arrested in Oregon for the unsolved assault and murder of a woman that occurred 44 years ago in Boston, Massachusetts. It was confirmed that DNA samples collected at the crime scene matched those of the suspect. The fact that the victim was a red-haired woman and the murders took place in the same location was also a deciding factor, according to the confession.
According to the suspect’s statement, he killed the victim by hitting him in the head with a hammer he had obtained from a building that was undergoing renovations at the time of the crime. He also admitted to raping her after she died.
The woman’s cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force trauma to the head and a skull fracture.
Another man was suspected of being responsible for this incident, but it was discovered in 1981 that he was unrelated.
The Suffolk County prosecutor’s office said the suspect also admitted to involvement in another murder in a southern state, and that related investigations are underway. He also revealed that he had committed murder in California and served “about 30 years” in prison.
