Arrest and Detention of Journalist Maryam Majdouline Lahham: Injustice Exposed on ‘X’ Platform

Journalist Maryam Majdouline Lahham was arrested and transferred to the Berber barracks of Khazen Verdun after a publication she published on the “X” platform.

The Alternative Press Syndicate denounced her detention “on the background of a tweet and attempts to force her to delete it, which is an illegal procedure, in addition to not allowing her lawyer to stay with her during the investigation. It calls for her immediate release and solidarity with her.”

Journalist Al-Lahham was summoned to the Central Criminal Investigation Department of the Public Prosecutor, Ghassan Oweidat, with a reference from the Public Prosecutor, Ghassan Khoury, to appear, according to a “personal” complaint from Judge Muhammad Ahmad Assaf, President of the Supreme Sunni Sharia Court in Beirut.

Judge Oweidat stipulated that Majdouleen delete her post in order to release her, but she refused, according to what Ghada Eid reported.

Lahham had previously published the details of her summons on Tuesday via the “X” platform, and said: “I was summoned to the Central Criminal Investigation Department (Ministry of Justice) affiliated to the Public Prosecutor Ghassan Oweidat, and with a reference from the Public Prosecutor Ghassan Khoury, to appear tomorrow at ten o’clock in the morning. According to a “personal” complaint from Judge Dr. Muhammad Ahmad Assaf, President of the Higher Sunni Sharia Court in Beirut, where Judge Assaf asked to charge me with crimes of slander and contempt and incited the Sunnis against him, considering that I was “impersonating a journalist”, on the background of a publication through an application X, in which the case of Judge Assaf personally benefiting from one of the litigants (40% deduction of university tuition for his children – for the Arab League affiliated with the endowment) in a case he considered as president of the Supreme Sharia Court (which is the endowment of charity and charity case), which constitutes a violation of the law due to the conflict of interests And what amounts to the offense of bringing benefit and deviating from the obligation of impartiality imposed on judges.

And she continued: “Knowing that I had submitted a report about this incident to the competent authorities. Noting that I contacted the head of the editors’ syndicate, Professor Joseph Al-Qusaifi, who advised me to refrain from appearing except before a judge as a journalist. However, I will appear before the investigation.”

Then she said in another post: “It is true that as a journalist, I am only supposed to appear before a judge, but with my appearance I direct a lesson to judicial judges wanted in the port explosion case who refuse to comply with the judiciary, citing loopholes through which they infiltrate to evade giving their testimony, so how if the judicial police that pursue me follows For the evading judge?
