The World Health Organization (WHO) noted on Thursday, July 11, that Covid-19 is still killing around 1,700 people worldwide every week. The U.N. agency called on high-risk groups to continue getting vaccinated against the disease. Its director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of declining vaccination coverage.

Despite these deaths, “Data shows vaccination coverage has declined among health workers and people over 60, the two groups most at risk””, lamented Mr Ghebreyesus at a news conference in Geneva.

“WHO recommends that high-risk groups receive Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of last dose”he recalled.

More than 7 million people have died since the end of 2019

More than 7 million deaths from the disease have been reported to the World Health Organization, but the true toll from the epidemic appears to be much higher. The virus that causes Covid-19 was first discovered in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.

The World Health Organization urges governments to continue monitoring and sequencing the virus and ensuring access to affordable and reliable tests, treatments and vaccines.
