American actor and former politician Arnold Schwarzenegger was briefly detained this Wednesday by German customs agents at Munich airport for failing to declare a valuable luxury watch.
Austrian-born Schwarzenegger was finally able to continue his journey, a spokesman for Munich’s main customs office said Wednesday followingnoon. He was also able to take the watch.
In any case, criminal tax proceedings had been initiated once morest Schwarzenegger, a world champion bodybuilder and action movie star who also served two terms as governor of the US state of California.
According to customs authorities, Schwarzenegger had not declared any valuable luxury watches upon his arrival in Munich, although he apparently planned to leave them in the European Union.
“If the goods remain in the EU, you have to pay taxes and duties on them,” said the customs spokesman. “That applies to everyone. We have taken up the matter. The case will now go to the criminal and fines competent in Augsburg”.
According to ‘Bild’, Schwarzenegger was on his way to Austria for a charity auction to benefit climate initiatives and was also planning to attend the Hahnenkamm ski race in the town of Kitzbühel, in the Austrian Alps.
