In a successful operation carried out in the town of San Sebastián de Palmitas, on the outskirts of Medellín, the National Army, together with the Police, seized 10 rifles that were going to be delivered to members of the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC), also known as the ‘Gulf Clan’. The rifles, which were in two vehicles, were intercepted while they were traveling on the national highway that connects Medellín with Urabá, Antioquia.
According to the report of Brigadier General Jorge Ricardo Hernández Vargas, commander of the Fourth Brigade, the vehicles were located by motorized units that were carrying out surveillance work in the area. Upon detecting the presence of the military, the occupants of the vehicles quickly abandoned the vehicles and fled, leaving behind two suspicious tulas. During the inspection of the packages, the 10 rifles were found, which were seized by the authorities.
Among the rifles found were four 5.56 caliber R4 weapons, which have the ability to fire in automatic and semi-automatic mode, with a rate of fire of up to 850 shots per minute and an effective range of up to 400 meters. In addition, six 7.62 mm caliber R1 rifles were found, high-powered weapons commonly used in urban confrontations due to their maneuverability and resistance. This type of weapon is widely used by terrorist and criminal groups due to its easy acquisition in the illegal market.
According to military intelligence, the seized rifles were going to be delivered to Jobanis de Jesús Ávila Villadiego, alias ‘Chiquito Malo’, main leader of the ‘Clan del Golfo’, and Wilmar Albeiro Mejía Úsuga, alias ‘Richard’, ringleader of the substructure Edwin Román Velásquez Valle, responsible for coordinating attacks and homicides in the Urabá region. These rifles, whose total value exceeds 250 million pesos, are essential for the criminal operations of these illegal armed structures.
This blow to organized crime is another example of the National Army’s efforts to weaken the capabilities of the ‘Gulf Clan’ and other illegal armed groups in the region. The seizure of these rifles, along with other intelligence actions and military operations, seeks to reduce the firepower of these groups and protect the communities of Urabá, an area frequently affected by the actions of these illegal armed groups.
The National Army remains committed to the security of citizens and continues working to dismantle criminal structures throughout the country.

**Interview with General Jorge Ricardo Hernández Vargas on Recent Rifle Seizure Related to the Gulf Clan**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, General Hernández. Can you tell us about the recent operation in which your forces seized 10 rifles destined for the Gulf Clan?
**General Hernández:** Thank you for having me. This operation took place in San Sebastián de Palmitas, just outside Medellín, where our military intelligence units were conducting routine surveillance. We spotted two vehicles that aroused our suspicion based on their behavior and location.
**Editor:** What kind of equipment did you find in those vehicles?
**General Hernández:** In the course of inspecting the vehicles, we discovered 10 rifles, including four R4 rifles, which are quite powerful and can operate in both automatic and semi-automatic modes. These weapons are notable for their high rate of fire, which poses a significant threat to local security.
**Editor:** How did the occupants of the vehicles respond when your units approached?
**General Hernández:** Upon our arrival, the occupants attempted to flee the scene, abandoning their vehicles and the weapons. This quick response from our units allowed us to secure the rifles without further conflict.
**Editor:** Can you elaborate on the significance of this seizure concerning the Gulf Clan and regional security?
**General Hernández:** The Gulf Clan, or Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, continues to be a significant player in drug trafficking and organized crime in the region. Seizing these weapons not only disrupts their operations but also sends a clear message that we are committed to combating illegal arms trafficking and the violence associated with these criminal groups.
**Editor:** What are the next steps for the military and police following this successful operation?
**General Hernández:** Following the seizure, we will continue to conduct intelligence-led operations in collaboration with law enforcement to further thwart the activities of the Gulf Clan. Our aim is not only to seize arms but also to dismantle their supply chains and arrest those involved.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, General Hernández. It’s reassuring to hear about the ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region.
**General Hernández:** Thank you for highlighting these efforts. Ensuring the safety of our communities is our top priority.
