Army Communications Brigade will take care of cyberspace and electromagnetic space

He Ministry of National Defense published this August 26 in the Central American newspaper the Agreement 122 – 2024, which establishes the creation of the Guatemalan Army Communications Brigade, with jurisdiction throughout the national territory.

According to the publication, the objective of the unit will be “assist” in defense of the cyberspace and electromagnetic space“before any threat or violation of a diverse nature and multidimensional scope, in defense of the infrastructure criticism, media and communications and information systems for internal and external security.”

It establishes that the Brigade will channel everything relating to its functions, organization y compliance of his mission through the leadership of the National Defense General Staff.

The Ministry of Defense will issue the internal provisions that are necessary for allocate financial resources.

The State The Defense Major will draft the Regulation of the organization and functions of the Brigade within 60 days of the entry into force of this Agreement.

The Brigade will begin its functions 30 days later the entry into force of the agreement.

In addition, Agreement 65 – 2019 with which the was created is repealed. Army Communications Command and the Information Technology Command.

The creation of the Brigade is a unification of the commands that were repealed. This contributes to streamlining processes and makes government spending more effective, according to retired Colonel Jorge Ortega, an expert in security and new multidimensional threats.

“First, it is a step that operates within the operational mechanism and human capital with respect to the Army,” he commented.

The retired colonel and university professor acknowledges that the need for this protection is growing, as the State and citizens could be attacked through the systems of banks, airports, hospitals and even with the new smart traffic lights that are being installed in the capital.

“Any intruder or hack that may come from abroad can visit our airport system, for example, which is in its infancy and can affect us,” he warned.

Ortega believes that political will and assertive communication are necessary for citizens to feel protected and understand the importance of the Brigade and the systems used, not only in electromagnetic communications, but also in cyberspace, which gathers data from the population and the State.

“Cybersecurity is a matter of perception. It is generated and is the result of assertive communication from the authorities to the population in order to foster and create a bond of trust,” he explained.

He points out that communication is a major challenge, both in times of war and in times of peace. He also acknowledges that the organization has trained professionals who are trained in different countries through scholarships.
