Bangladesh: The prime minister resigned

Sheikh Hasina boarded a military helicopter bound for India, according to information from Prothom Alo Daily. At the same time, thousands of protesters stormed the prime minister’s residence in Dhaka, television reported.

Bangladesh’s prime minister has resigned after weeks of deadly protests in the country.

They have a “safe haven” away from her official residence, Reuters news agency reports.

At least 95 people, including at least 14 police officers, were killed in clashes in the capital on Sunday, according to local news reports, while hundreds more were injured.

At least six people were killed on Monday in clashes between police and protesters in Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.

The protests began with students trying to end a quota system for government jobs, but clashes with police and pro-government activists escalated into violence that left more than 200 dead last month.

That sparked more protests demanding government accountability, which turned into calls for Ms. Hasina, who has led the country since 2009, to step down.
