Army athletes at the largest summer sports event “European Games 2023”

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner is happy regarding the first successes and wishes her all the best and every success

Vienna (OTS) – From June 21 to July 2, 2023, the Armed Forces are sending 68 elite army athletes to the “European Games 2023” in Kraków (Poland) – Europe’s largest summer sports event of the year. They have already had their first successes.

“Competitive army sport is an important part of our army. Here, too, its versatility is evident when our top athletes compete in 19 disciplines with the best athletes in Europe. I am delighted that our 3×3 basketball team and our synchronized swimmers started so successfully at the ‘European Games 2023’. I wish all elite Army athletes all the best and much success,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

Armed Forces strongly represented

At the major sporting event, Austria will be represented by 170 athletes in a total of 24 sports – 68 of whom are soldiers from the Austrian Armed Forces in 19 disciplines. The elite army athletes rise to the challenge and compete with the top athletes in Europe in the disciplines of badminton, 3×3 basketball, archery, fencing, judo, canoe slalom, canoe sprint, karate, athletics, modern pentathlon, mountain biking, synchronized swimming, Ski jumping, sport climbing, shooting, taekwondo, table tennis, triathlon, and diving compete for podium places.

First successes

Considerable successes have already been achieved in the first competitions. The army 3×3 basketball team won its first two matches and the Alexandri sisters opened the synchronized swimming games with a world-class performance.

Medal Candidates

The army’s major medal hopes are platoon commander Lukas Weißhaidinger (athletics), platoon commander Bettina Plank (karate), platoon commander Michaela Polleres (judo), the Alexandri sisters Corporal Anna-Maria Alexandri, Corporal Eirini-Marina Alexandri and Corporal Vasiliki Alexandri (synchronized swimming), Platoon leader Sofia Polcanova (table tennis), platoon leader Jacqueline Seifriedsberger and platoon leader Viktoria Wolffhardt (canoe slalom).
