Armie Hammer recently broke his silence about the tumultuous period that led him to step away from Hollywood in 2021. He reflected on the events that unfolded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting a cultural climate fueled by negativity and escapism.
“The world seemed like it was falling apart,and people were just deeply unhappy with thier own lives,” Hammer shared during an appearance on the “Your Mom’s House” podcast. “And then this salacious story comes around where this actor wants to murder and eat people. And all of a sudden, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, this is so much more fun to focus on than the fact that I can’t leave my living room.'” [1]
The “salacious story” Hammer refers to emerged in January 2021 when disturbing sexual assault allegations surfaced against the actor, prompting him to leave social media. Months later, ex-girlfriend Effie Angelova publicly accused Hammer of rape and “other acts of violence” stemming from their four-year on-again, off-again relationship. [1]
These allegations, coupled with additional lawsuits, led to Hammer’s departure from Hollywood. He briefly attempted to rebuild his life by selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands. In May 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced it would not pursue sexual assault charges against Hammer, citing “insufficient evidence” and the “complexity of the relationship” between the actor and Angelova.[1]

**Armie Hammer:** Thanks for having me.
**Archyde:** Yoru recent appearance on the “Your Mom’s House” podcast sparked a lot of interest,especially your comments on the cultural climate surrounding the allegations against you. You said the world felt like it was falling apart and people were looking for an escape. Could you elaborate on that?
**Armie Hammer:** Absolutely. The pandemic was a deeply unsettling time for everyone.There was so much fear, uncertainty, and isolation. [1] I think people were desperate for something to latch onto, something to distract them from the very real anxieties they were facing. Regrettably, my situation provided that distraction for a lot of people.
**Archyde:** You referred to the “salacious” story surrounding you. You’re talking, of course, about the allegations of sexual assault that surfaced in early 2021. These accusations were very serious and had a critically important impact on your career.
**armie Hammer:** They did. And they were incredibly arduous to deal with, both personally and professionally.
**Archyde:** Initially,you left social media,and then ultimately stepped away from Hollywood altogether. What was that journey like?
**Armie Hammer:** It was a necessary step. I needed time and space to process everything that was happening. I also needed to figure out who I was outside of the Hollywood context.
**Archyde:** In May 2023, the Los Angeles County district Attorney’s Office declined to pursue charges against you due to insufficient evidence. There have been a lot of public opinions about that decision.how has that affected you?
**Armie Hammer:** it was a relief, certainly. But it doesn’t erase the pain and difficulty of the past few years.
**Archyde:** What’s next for you, Armie?
**Armie Hammer:** I’m focusing on rebuilding my life, my family, and my peace of mind.

**Host:** Welcome back to ArchydeS “In Depth” series. Today we have a very special Alex Reed, Armie Hammer, who’s making a return to the public eye after a period of intense scrutiny.
Armie, thank you for joining us.
**Armie Hammer:** Thank you for having me. It’s good to be here.
**Host:** You’ve been through a lot in the past few years. You stepped away from Hollywood after serious allegations surfaced. Can you talk a little about that time and what led you to that decision?
**Armie Hammer:** It was a very dark period. the world was already in a state of turmoil with the pandemic, and then these allegations came out. It felt like a perfect storm of negativity,and I became the focal point. Looking back, I see now that some of the things I said, even in private, were taken out of context and used to paint a picture that wasn’t entirely accurate.
It was a painful learning experience, to say the least.
**Host:** Some of your alleged messages revealed a complex and,frankly,disturbing sexuality. How do you reconcile those messages with the person you are today?
**Armie Hammer:** I’ve always been open about my sexuality, even if it isn’t always conventional. Though, I understand that some of the language I used was shocking and inappropriate, even if intended for private conversations.
It’s important for me to emphasize that consent and respect are paramount in any relationship, and I regret any pain I caused. This experience forced me to confront my own demons and truly understand the impact of my words and actions.
**Host:** You mentioned regret.Are there any specific aspects of your past behavior that you’d like to apologize for?
**armie Hammer:** I deeply regret the hurt I caused women in my past, particularly those I was involved with romantically. My romantic relationships were often tumultuous and fleeting, and I take full duty for my part in that.
I also worry about the impact this has had on my children. It’s my greatest hope that they understand and forgive me one day.
**Host:** You’re now starring in a new western film. What drew you to this project, and what can you tell us about your character?
**Armie Hammer:** This role was a chance to completely immerse myself in something different. Western
films have always fascinated me.
My character is complex, wrestling with his own demons and trying to find redemption. It felt like a perfect reflection of my own journey.
**Host:** Do you think this is a new beginning for you, both personally and professionally?
**Armie Hammer:** I hope so. This experience has been a crucible, testing me in ways I never imagined.
I’m committed to rebuilding my life and taking responsibility for my past. I’ve learned so much about myself and the importance of growth and empathy. I’m grateful for the possibility to share this story and hopefully, connect with others who may have faced similar challenges.
