Armenia-EU Visa Regime: The Latest Updates and Challenges

There has been a significant regression in the issue of easing the visa regime between Armenia and the European Union, Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said today, March 15, during a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission on European Integration.

“Unfortunately, there is one area, one issue where the desired result has not yet been achieved. Work with the EU has been unprecedentedly intense and there is progress in all directions. But on one issue, both in relations with the EU (as a whole) and with individual members of the union, the situation is very far from positive. This is a visa issue,” noted the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia.

Work, according to him, was carried out on this issue at all levels, but there is no talk of achieving progress.

“On the contrary, there has been a significant regression. Even for students traveling under the Erasmus program, although they were supposed to have no problems. We are also talking regarding some officials. In addition, we receive numerous complaints from citizens,” a senior diplomat informed parliamentarians.

The beginning of negotiations on liberalizing the visa regime of Armenia with EU countries is a matter of several months. Deputy Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan stated this on November 14 last year in a conversation with journalists. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell the day before, following a meeting of the heads of foreign affairs departments of the bloc countries in Brussels, he announced that the EU would consider possible support for Yerevan within the framework of the European Peace Fund, as well as liberalization of the visa regime with Armenia.
