The Ombudsman’s Office issued an urgent call to the National Liberation Army (ELN) to revoke the indefinite armed strike announced in Chocó, which began this Saturday, November 9.
The measure, which mainly affects the basins of the San Juan, Sipí and Cajón rivers, involves more than 45,000 people, who are already in a critical situation due to the intense rains.

Iris Marín Ortiz, public defender, expressed her concern about the impact that this armed strike will have on at least 85 Afro-descendant communities in the department.
“This armed strike will not only limit the mobility of the communities, but will put their right to health and life at risk, by hindering access for medical units and relief agencies.”said Marin.
The governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, warned that 80% of the municipalities in the department are affected by flooding and river overflows, which has generated displacement and damage to crops and homes.

The alert for rising rivers has been high, and regional authorities fear that the situation will worsen if humanitarian aid access is not allowed.
This announcement of the ELN’s armed strike comes just after the meeting in Caracas between its delegates and the Colombian government, which raises questions about the coherence of the armed group in its efforts to achieve peace.
