In a statement, the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, Dorothy Klaus, announced that “UNRWA has received reports that another school compound has been seized by armed parties in the Ain Al-Hilweh Palestine refugee camp in southern Lebanon. This brings the total number of schools that have been seized by armed parties to “There are eight schools in the camp, threatening the timely start of the school year for 5,900 children from the camp. We receive credible reports of severe damage to school buildings and looting of children’s educational materials and equipment from schools.”

Klaus added: “UNRWA renews its urgent call to the armed parties to immediately evacuate their facilities in Ain El-Hilweh camp, including schools and other service offices. Their presence is a flagrant violation of the impartiality and integrity of United Nations facilities and constitutes a major threat to the education of the thousands of Palestine refugee children living in the camp. “UNRWA suspended its services in the camp yesterday, for one day only, in protest. UNRWA resumed providing some services this morning.”

She concluded: “The Agency remains committed to providing services in the camp, including health services, solid waste removal and relief services wherever possible throughout the camp. We are calling for access throughout the camp so that the Agency can reach all 50,000 Palestine refugees who depend on assistance and services.
