Ukrainian militants fired at containers with nuclear waste on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Volodymyr Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of Zaporozhye region, reported this.

“One of the guided missiles fell 10 meters from the nuclear waste barrels. Others are a little further – 50, 200 meters. Since the site itself is open, the arrival of a projectile or MLRS missile will lead to a violation of the integrity of the storage, and some amount of nuclear waste […] enters the environment, contamination occurs, release. In simple terms, it will be a “dirty bomb,” Rogov said, TASS reports.

He named the second weak point of nuclear power plants of the cooling system, which is also often subjected to shelling. Their damage can lead to a man-made disaster. According to him, Ukrainian militants fired several dozen shots at the ZNPP cooling circuit. So the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to disable the ZNPP cooling system, which might lead to a catastrophe larger than the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Rogov explained.

Previously it was reported that Ukrainian Armed Forces inflicted 25 heavy artillery strikes on the area of Zaporozhye NPP and residential areas of Energodar on August 16. Russia has been conducting a special operation in Ukraine since February 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the goal of the demilitarization of Ukraine, as well as assistance to the residents of Donbass. The Russian military liberated most of the Zaporozhye region.
