Armed forces budget: senators want to accelerate investments

The Senate is giving the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, a hard time. The chamber with a majority on the right is in turn examining the military programming bill (LPM), which devotes an envelope of 413 billion euros to the budget of the Armies for the next seven years. The National Assembly voted the text by a large majority on June 7, without major change in its budgetary balance.

The senators who are examining the text all week have themselves engaged in a financial showdown with the government. They emphasize that the war imposes needs now and not in 2030. They have thus voted for a different budgetary trajectory than that proposed by the government, in order to spend more in the years to come. Their amendments push the bill up, with 1 billion for equipment maintenance and the addition to the shopping list of two A400M military transport planes, three overseas patrol vessels and around a hundred tanks, the order of which had been shifted to following 2030.
