Italian Monza defender Armando Izzo has been sentenced in Naples to five years in prison. This for having participated in the organization of a fixed match.
The three-team international will appeal the sentence, his lawyers said. Izzo was accused of helping to fix, along with two other players, a Serie B match between Modena and his then club Avellino in the 2013-14 season, according to Italian news agencies.
A court in Naples found the 31-year-old guilty of collusion with the Camorra, the city’s mafia organization, but also of sports fraud for agreeing to influence the outcome of the match for money.
His cousin Umberto Accurso, suspected of belonging to a Camorra clan, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, as was another alleged member of the same group.
The Monza club, owned by the former President of the Italian Council Silvio Berlusconi, for its part considers that its player is innocent: ‘Monza expresses its full support for Armando, convinced that he is not involved in criminal activities’ , writes the Lombard club in a press release.
For its first season in Serie A, Monza ensured its maintenance, occupying tenth place five days from the end. Izzo has played 26 league matches this season.
In April 2017, he was suspended for 18 months and fined 50,000 euros for failing to report match-fixing while playing at Avellino.
