Arkab receives managers of Chinese groups as part of the examination of the Gara Djebilet mine exploitation project

ALGIERS – The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received Tuesday in Algiers the heads of Chinese groups as part of the examination of the Gara Djebilet mine exploitation project, with whom he discussed reviewed current and future cooperation and investment opportunities, said a ministry press release.

The Chinese delegation is made up of representatives of the Chinese consortium “CMH”, partner of the “SONAREM” group in the framework of the Gara Djebilet mine exploitation project, and led by the president of the consortium, Zhou Zhipeng and the vice-president of the Chinese group “Shanghai Delong steel”, adds the same source.

The meeting which took place at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of the CEO of the “SONAREM” group and the CEO of the National Iron and Steel Company “Feraal” (a subsidiary of SONAREM), as well as executives from the ministry and “Feraal”, was marked by the examination of the state of cooperation relations between the Chinese consortium “CMH” and the “SONAREM” group operating the Gara Djebilet mine.

On this occasion, the manufacturing industry and the production of finished and semi-finished iron and steel products were also discussed during the meeting.

Mr. Arkab examined with the head of the “Shanghai Delong Steel” complex, the opportunities for cooperation and investment in the field of exploitation of iron ore extracted from the Gara Djebilet mine, given that this complex is the one of the largest Chinese steel complexes, with an annual production estimated at 35 million tonnes per year, an estimated turnover of 35 billion USD and a workforce of 46,000 employees, in addition to several investments outside China, according to the ministry.

The parties welcomed, on this occasion, the “exceptional” level reached by cooperative relations between the two countries, particularly in the fields of energy and mines, affirming their “determination to move forward in order to intensify exchanges and visits with a view to opening new prospects for cooperation aimed at deepening the partnership between the mining companies of the two countries,” the statement said.

Mr. Arkab also expressed Algeria’s “readiness to develop and deepen this cooperation with Chinese companies in the mining and metallurgical field, like the Gara Djebilet mine project and its exploitation, through supporting the implementation of joint projects in the processing industries in the near future, to supply the national steel industry and export the surplus.”
