Arkab discusses with Qatari ambassador ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation

ALGIERS- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received, on Thursday in Algiers, the Ambassador of Qatar, Abdulaziz Ali Al-Naama, with whom he examined the means of developing bilateral cooperation in various fields of the sector, said a press release from the ministry.

The talks between the two parties focused on “means of developing and strengthening bilateral cooperation relations, qualified as excellent, in the field of energy and mines”, the statement said.

On this occasion, the two parties “explored the opportunities and future prospects for investment in structural projects in Algeria, particularly in the field of manufacturing industries and the petrochemical industry”, adds the same source.

The two parties discussed, in this context, the project to create, in Algeria, a chemical complex for the production of butene and polybutene, which the Qatari company “Power International Holding” wishes to carry out in partnership with the Sonatrach group.

After welcoming the “good relations of cooperation and partnership between Algeria and Qatar”, Mr. Arkab underlined that Sonatrach was ready to work with the Qatari company (Power International Holding) for the realization of a butene and polybutene production complex.

This project is part of the national strategy for the development of manufacturing industries and the enhancement of Algeria’s hydrocarbon resources, the objective being to enable the sector to contribute effectively to the diversification of the national economy and to the creation of added value and jobs, explained the Minister.

According to him, this project “can be conceived within an integrated framework also including investment in research and the exploitation of new reserves capable of contributing to the supply of this project with gas”.

In this regard, the Minister recalled the advantages offered by the new law on hydrocarbons to attract investors, intensify the activity of research, exploration and production of hydrocarbons and develop manufacturing industries.

During the meeting, it was agreed to organize a visit to Algeria, the first week of September 2023, for the benefit of a delegation from the Qatari company, in order to deepen discussions with Sonatrach on this subject.

For his part, the Qatari ambassador welcomed the cooperation relations between the two countries, stressing the interest of Qatari companies for investment in Algeria within the framework of the new law on hydrocarbons and the realization of major projects. in research, exploration, manufacturing industries and petrochemicals.

The two parties also welcomed the level of dialogue and consultation between the two countries within the framework of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the statement concluded.
