Arizona Wildcats Secure Victory Over Houston Cougars in 27-3 Win

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — In a euphoric return to victory, Arizona celebrated its first win in 48 days as running back Quali Conley stunned the crowd with an impressive backflip.

After a challenging season that had seen the Wildcats struggle, the breaking of a long losing streak was a moment to cherish.

Noah Fifita demonstrated exceptional leadership on the field, throwing for two touchdowns, while Conley notched two scores to secure a decisive 27-3 victory over Houston on Friday night.

Fifita showcased his skills with a touchdown pass to Tetairoa McMillan in the first quarter and followed it up by finding Conley for another score, igniting the team and the crowd as they went up 17-3 on Conley’s 13-yard touchdown catch.

Arizona’s defense was relentless, managing to shut down Houston’s efforts for the majority of the game, especially after a painful loss to UCF two weeks prior.

“We’re fired up,” Arizona coach Brent Brennan said, reflecting the revitalized spirit of the team. “We were super focused on just getting one, we had to win one and now we get to celebrate.”

In contrast, Houston (4-6, 3-4) couldn’t carry the momentum from their previous wins over Utah and No. 20 Kansas State into this game. Despite some offensive movement, the Cougars faced critical setbacks, including two lost fumbles and an interception, undermining their potential to score.

J’Marion Burnette’s fumble on Houston’s opening drive proved costly, as did Zeon Chriss’s interception shortly after. The Cougars struggled, turning the ball over on downs four times, including a disastrous fourth-and-goal attempt from the 2-yard line.

Arizona seized its lone touchdown under unusual circumstances—a free play due to a Houston offsides penalty, allowing Fifita to launch a jump ball into the end zone, where McMillan made a spectacular catch for a 33-yard touchdown.

Tyler Loop capped off the half with an impressive school-record 62-yard field goal, granting Arizona a 10-3 lead going into the locker room.

Arizona surged decisively in the second half, establishing dominance and scoring again, while Houston’s attempts at trick plays fell flat, further compounding their misfortunes.

“All week in practice we talked about finishing,” Conley emphasized following his pivotal contributions, including a 50-yard touchdown run that sealed the Cougars’ fate and finalized the score at 27-3.

Genesis Smith emerged as a standout player for Arizona, demonstrating his versatility on defense with an interception, a fumble recovery, and seven tackles, playing a crucial role in the Wildcats’ victory.

“We all just continue to see Genesis grow and develop as a player,” Brennan noted, praising Smith’s contributions and his ability to make impactful plays.
