NAU joins ASU in the initiative of Arizona universities to train more health professionals, who are in short supply in the state.

Northern Arizona University (NAU) will build a new campus to add a medical degree to its academic offerings. The decision, announced by the Arizona Board of Regents on September 29, comes in response to the growing shortage of health professionals in the state and complements a similar announcement made by Arizona State University (ASU) that it will create a college of medicine in Maricopa County, where the city of Phoenix is located.

NAU’s new school will be the first of its kind in the region and will be geared toward training physicians and registered nurses to serve rural and Indigenous communities, among other underserved minorities in the region. It was also announced that it will minimize the debt of graduates, that is, it will implement some kind of facility to finance careers that are traditionally expensive, such as medicine.

Both the ASU and NAU projects will be part of the AZ Healthy Tomorrow initiative, whose goal is for the state to reach the national average of doctors and registered nurses per capita, in addition to improving access to comprehensive health care for all the residents.

The institutions hope to double the number of healthcare personnel graduating in Arizona. The state’s governor, Katie Hobbs, for her part, committed to investing $11 million in this project, noting that there is a “critical need for qualified health professionals, as more companies attract more people to move to Arizona.” .
