Arizona Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen delivers dominant complete game shutout against Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO — Zac Gallen pitched three-hit ball in the second complete game of his career, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Friday for their third straight victory.

Rookie Corbin Carroll was responsible for the only run of the game with an RBI single in the eighth inning once morest Mark Leiter Jr. Seiya Suzuki came very close to making a great catch in right field, but the ball hit the grass in front of his glove and the out call was reversed following replay review.

Arizona (74-68) won for the fourth time in five games. This put him two games behind Chicago for the second wild card spot in the National League standings.

Gallen (15-7) struck out nine and walked one following going down in his previous two outings.

This was Gallen’s first complete game since pitching one-hit ball in a 5-0 win over Atlanta in the first of a seven-inning doubleheader on April 25, 2021; Madison Bumgarner followed with a seven-inning no-hitter to close the doubleheader.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 4-0; Geraldo Perdomo 3-0. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel 1-for-4 with one run scored. Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno 2-0.

For the Cubs, Panamanian Miguel Amaya 2-0.
