In the final, the team of Akis Manziou awaits Panathinaikos, in a repeat of the 2010 final between them, where the “greens” were victorious.
The hosts started with excitement and pressure in Lucas Chavez’s goal. Fran Veleth in the 2nd minute shot over the bodies following the stoppage time, while Shapi Suleimanov’s shot in the 6th minute missed the target.
With the passage of time, Panaitolikos managed to “absorb” the pressure and come out with claims in the attack. In the 20th minute, Haris Mavrias overcame the resistance of Franco Ferrari and made a cross from the right, but Nikos Karelis’ header went high and assisted the work of Julian Cuesta, while seconds later, Jakub Brambetz caught up with the forward at the height of the area Ilias Hatzitheodoridis.
Anxiety began to become evident in the two groups who were waiting for each other’s mistake. However, the Thessalonians maintained possession of the ball (70%). In the 38th minute, from the cooperation of Manu Garcia, Moses Odubajo and the latter’s turn, Alvaro Zamora scored, but with Bruno Duarte’s counterattack, the ball stopped on the outside of the net.
The half ended with Lucas Chavez’s impressive save on Suleimanov’s powerful, left-footed shot. With time passing and the scenery not changing, the two coaches began to make their moves. Yiannis Petrakis signaled… a full attack, with Panaitolikos looking for the goal that will send the pair into overtime.
Huanpi’s shot in the 71st minute went past the right post of Cuesta’s goal, while Bruno Duarte’s header in the 86th minute was clearly more dangerous for the Aris goal – however, it was also off target, in the visitors’ prime moment.
It was 0-0 until the final with Aris players, coaching staff and fans erupting in celebration for a return to the final following 14 years thanks to that Fran Veleth goal.
Applause and recognition of the effort, however, also from the friends of Panaitolikos for the effort of the Petrakis players who wrote history by reaching the semi-finals.
Now, the “canaries” turn their attention to trying to stay in the division and Aris in the Play Offs, with the derby in Toumba following on Sunday (10/3, 20:30).
