Aris-AEK 1-2: With an upset, the Union remained at the top 2024-04-22 15:31:16

Laurent Moron (38′) was the one who put Akis Manziou’s team in front of the score, but the Union left with the three valuable points from “Cleanthis Vikelidis” thanks to the goals of Djibril Sidibe (50′), Nordin Amrabat (84 ′), missing many opportunities for a more comfortable victory. She found in front of her, however, an amazing Lefteris Houtesiotis who, until the 84th minute, kept the point for the Thessalonians on his own.

The game started with the best omens for the fans of the sport. Just in the 2nd minute, from Ezekiel Ponce’s pass-lob, Lefteris Houtesiotis was forced into an excellent, low intervention in Niklas Eliasson’s place. Three minutes later, it was Giorgos Athanasiadis’s turn to show his skills, impressively repelling Alvaro Zamora’s powerful shot with his right hand. The first quarter ended with Domagoi Vida’s header, which found Houtesiotis on hand.

Amrabad and Eliasson were very active, with the Swede firing a right-footed shot over the crossbar in the 17th minute, while seconds later Ponce broke free in the area but his left-footed shot was well wide of the mark. At 22′, Aris missed a great, triple chance: due to a mistake by Damian Simanski, Moron shot, the Greek goalkeeper saved, the ball went to Michalis Panagidis who crossed over Vida to end the phase with the shot of the artist Manus Garthias from the right goal post of AEK.

In the 28th minute, it was Steven Zuber’s turn to threaten, but the Swiss’s powerful, left-footed shot was blocked in two times by Houtesiotis, only for the scene to repeat itself seconds later – out this time. The visitors’ 0-5 corners revealed the image of the match that continued with Sidibe’s missed shot (30′), but… In the 36′ and against the flow of the match, after the first corner for the Thessalonians, Moron shot , the ball bounced back to be chased away by Athanasiadis with overpowering effort. The referee and assistant continued the match but the VAR (Patrick Franz Hanslbauer and Reinhard Buxbaum) intervened to make it 1-0 as they ruled that the ball had completely crossed the line.

The half ended with another missed shot – well over the crossbar – by Amrabad in an ideal counter attack with Eliasson. The second half started after 23 (!!!) minutes and started with AEK immediately equalizing. Eliasson’s vertical pass to Ponce who crossed, for Sidibe to push the ball into the defenseless goal. The visitors’ pressure continued, with Ponce (54′) finding the net from the outside and from a difficult angle after Amrabad’s pass.

The Moroccan was… omnipresent in AEK’s attack and prepared another opportunity, this time for Simanski’s head (57′), but Houtesiotis showed tremendous reflexes saving his goal. The Greek goalkeeper also had luck on his side, since Vida’s nailed header in the corner that followed, found the ball in his arms. Matias Almeida’s team created and lost chances with the scoop, but either Houtesiotis (on Amrabat’s shots in the 60′ and Tzuber’s shots in the 63′) or the miss (on Tzuber’s in the 61′) kept the score at 1-1 .

Houtesiotis was beaten by Amrabat in the 65th minute, but to do so Ponce was offside and the goal was disallowed. The Aris goalkeeper had an answer to Eliasson’s shot in the 66th minute as well as to Sergio Araujo’s foul shot in the 79th minute to finally provide the solution for AEK in the 84th minute after Amrbat’s stoppage time with a strong left-footed shot from his height penalty kick. In the 88th minute, Christos Vergetis pointed to the penalty spot for Lindsey Rose’s mark on Arauchos, however, after the intervention of the VAR, he changed his decision as the Argentinian forward had previously fouled Yannis Fetfatzidis.

The 1-2 remained until the end with AEK being first again and at +1 from Panathinaikos, whom they welcome on Wednesday (24/4, 20:30) in an early final to win the championship. Aris, for its part, suffered its fourth consecutive defeat with the Cup final against Panathinaikos in mind (18/5).
