Irresistible as always in his new EP Iconicsthe Marlene Dietrich of the 8th arrondissement Arielle Dombasle shared with us her secrets of eternal youth (cashew nuts and love). Barbiconic interview.
Before talking regardingIconicsI had a question that has been bothering me since our last interview, are you funny?
Arielle Dombasle : I don’t know if I’m funny, but I put laughter all the same, at the command post of life. Pleasure and laughter, otherwise we’re in a very bad way.
I ask the question because we still have this image of you, thanks to the Big heads and TV interviews, of someone very funny.
It’s always the same thing. As I am the queen of metamorphosis, the mixed-race goddess who takes all forms and who manages to have fun with everything, well it’s true that the popular image, which is largely due to Big heads like that, is spontaneously sent back to me. But I am something other than that of course and fortunately. For me the Big heads, It’s therapy. We laugh at things so we don’t cry regarding them.
Very good. So, this Iconicsin which category should we put it? I have the impression that it’s Arielle Dombasle who does EDM, as the Americans would say.
What is EDM?
EDM is Electronic Dance Music but they also put David Guetta in this category as well as much more advanced things. This is your first project since the one with your great partner Nicolas (Ker, who died in 2021)
I found a musical cosmos. I had already started Iconics when she was alive. But it was more an ode to Marlene Dietrich and her extraordinary versatility and then, to what her name represents, like a caress that ends like a whiplash.
Did you know her a little bit, the Parisian Marlene Dietrich?
No, because she was still very old. She didn’t see anyone anymore when I arrived in Paris, but I saw her films and I listened to her a lot. She sang so much. And then she’s someone whose career I love. The album started around these actresses, singers who manage to be at the crossroads of style, voice and image. They are rare, admirable and legendary. I wanted to restore them. The list is long, but so I took Judy Garland for “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. And then of course Peggy Lee, a little forgotten, but who was the Frank Sinatra of the time and who wrote this song “Fever” that I love. And strangely, the other day, I had forgotten the words, I go on ChatGPT and he answers me: ” Oh no it’s impossible due to our policy, “Fever” is now censored. The lyrics are too sensual. “. Amazing…
Your song “Woman Just A Woman” is for Peggy Lee?
So that’s an ode to women. And the person who remains a sort of royal mistress at the top is still Simone de Beauvoir. When I read Memoirs of a Dutiful Girlvery young, around 14 years old, I said to myself, but who is this woman who asks herself the question of the feminine condition? And who answers it in such a brilliant way, by addressing the physiology of women as well as biology, sociology or metaphysics.
So, you said you found new musical partners?
It’s Charly Voodoo, a wonderful composer and virtuoso pianist. He represents what I like, this very classical trajectory since we can talk regarding Bach, Rossini or Vivaldi and he plays them and who at the same time is a very very pop figure.
And “Olympics”… What is this song?
Oh yes, this is another very big cosmos. It makes sense because of all these wonderful champions who have pushed the cursor. It is worth remembering that Coubertin said in 1900: ” We are not going to ruin the Olympic Games with women “It was a very big battle and the first gold medal was Hélène de Pourtalès because she was in a sailing team. Women only had access to tennis and cricket. So there were a few figures who were able, little by little, to conquer the disciplines that were forbidden to them.
And you yourself, what is your sport?
My element has always been swimming, water. When I’m in the water, I change species.
So you do your lengths every day, including Sundays, is that right?
No, unfortunately I can’t afford it. I have too much work. But whenever I’m on vacation, whether there’s a lake, a river, a pond, the sea or a puddle, I jump in.
What is the secret of your figure?
It’s just love, I think.
That’s not enough, alas. You have nuts, sometimes. What is the secret of these nuts?
It’s my granivorous side. Almonds, cashews, those are the two fundamentals, and macadamia nuts that I just discovered a year ago.
Okay, because I’ve always been told that cashews make you fat, so I’ll make a note of that.
No, because they are wonderful oils for the hair, for the skin.
This will be the last question, very important. Is there a return of the blonde and blondes in 2024?
Yes, absolutely, sportingly at the command post of the lightness and immortality of innocence.
