Ariel Vargas: Pioneering Digital Transformation at NASA’s Johnson Space Center

When Ariel Vargas became part of NASA in 2023, he was determined to carve out a meaningful legacy. Even in his brief time at the agency, he has established himself as a leading Digital Transformer through his pivotal role as a Network and ICAM (Identity, Credential, and Access Management) Service Integrator at Johnson Space Center (JSC). Ariel’s commitment to measurable transformation shines in every endeavor he undertakes. “I wanted to have my fingerprint on something no matter what it was, big or small. To be able to see an impact,” he passionately remarks. “And a lot of the things that I’m doing, both within my role and within Digital Transformation, I can see really flourishing already.”

In his current capacity, Ariel is responsible for the intricate integration and management of various network services, ensuring both compliance and operational efficacy. His projects include the ambitious modernization of NASA’s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system, aimed at merging and enhancing the agency’s telephone networks while improving wireless communications. Additionally, he is at the forefront of enhancing campus-wide wireless services and coverage at JSC, ensuring seamless connectivity. Ariel is also committed to optimizing inter-agency communication by integrating advanced functionalities into widely-used platforms like Microsoft Teams. Through these critical initiatives, he is dedicated to cultivating a more adaptive, collaborative work culture, in full alignment with Digital Transformation’s mission of fostering inclusive teamwork.

Equally important to him is the cultural dimension of Digital Transformation, particularly the intricate challenges that arise from a relentless pursuit of innovation. He acknowledges that progress “often requires a period of adjustment, especially for those encountering new tools or methods for the first time.” Ariel’s efforts extend to ensuring harmonious collaboration across various teams and centers, focusing on the establishment of interoperable architectures, processes, and tools. To gauge the effectiveness of their transformation initiatives, his team employs a variety of metrics, such as enhancements in network performance and the uptake of new tools and technologies. For example, the VoIP modernization project aims to eliminate 50% of telephones currently deployed at NASA centers. Following the NASA-wide service shutdown of non-compliant phones at JSC, only 6% of over 1300 impacted users reported any issues post-implementation. This exemplifies successful collaboration with users to find alternative solutions and embrace future innovations.

Lynn Vernon, JSC’s Digital Transformation lead and Chief Engineer for IT, emphasizes Ariel’s remarkable ability to engage with partners, grasp their mission requirements, and pinpoint innovative solutions to obstacles. “Ariel looks at things from a new perspective and is willing to ask ‘why’ or ‘why not.’ Why do we do it this way? Why not try this? He is consistently willing to explore new technologies and capabilities to transform the way we work,” says Lynn. Ariel’s commitment to continuous improvement solidifies his status as a natural leader within the Digital Transformation community.

Ariel’s path to NASA is notably unique, with his diverse experiences acting as stepping stones leading to his role as a Digital Transformer. Although his childhood in Florida, near Cape Canaveral, ignited a passion for space exploration, he initially embarked on a journey in pre-medicine after graduating high school. This was brief, as he shifted his focus and served in the Army. Following his tenure in the armed forces, he took an important step toward his dream by joining NASA as an intern through the Department of Defense’s SkillBridge program, designed to aid transitioning military personnel in navigating new career opportunities. His adeptness in assimilating NASA’s culture and demonstrating clear mission value swiftly transitioned him into a full-time civil servant role.

Throughout his academic and professional journey, Ariel has consistently focused on problem-solving. “You have to figure out what the problem is, and you have to be up to date with the newest, the latest and greatest, to help solve these problems.” This passion for identifying solutions has driven him to obtain a master’s degree in computer science and he is currently pursuing a doctorate in instructional design and performance technology. Beyond his responsibilities at NASA, Ariel is committed to pursuing diverse avenues that bolster his role as a champion for Digital Transformation initiatives.

Looking ahead, Ariel is filled with anticipation about the potential to support NASA’s space missions through the integration of AI and data. He is inspired by the idea that his current contributions will yield tangible results in the near future. “I really believe in embracing changes and innovation and driving impactful results, being able to see it,” he asserts. Given his impressive accomplishments over the past year, Ariel is making significant strides toward realizing the visionary future he has in mind.
