Yesterday, the PharmaMar Foundation held the 1st edition of the Argonauta Fundación PharmaMar Awardsrecognizing people or projects that have contributed significantly in recent years to the advancement of medicine, science and health in our society.
It was a night in which the power of science was revealed and the need to contribute to its dissemination and promotion from different areas, to advance the improvement of people’s quality of life. Furthermore, he gathered the most relevant personalities of recent years at a scientific and medical level, both national and international.
As highlighted José María Fernández Sousa-Faro, president of the Fundación PharmaMar and PharmaMar: “We are very proud to be able to bring together such distinguished personalities, whose work has contributed significantly to people’s health, in the first edition of our awards. From the PharmaMar Foundation, with these awards, we want to encourage you to continue working to achieve notable advances in scientific research and health care.”.
He award for the best clinical case has been awarded to Louis Gros, medical oncologist and Postdoc fellow, Early Lung and Cardiac Action Program (ELCAP) Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York (USA), for his innovative work in the treatment of advanced and refractory peritoneal mesothelioma, carried out in collaboration with Dr. Antonia Digklia. A work that not only represents a significant advance in the field of oncology, but also reflects a deep dedication to the well-being and hope of patients.
In the category award for the best care provision for a hospitalized COVID patient was awarded to Pedro landedPulmonologist at La Princesa University Hospital, for his contribution during one of the most challenging periods in modern medical history, where his experience and knowledge helped improve the quality of care and the lives of many patients with COVID-19.
He lifetime achievement award in basic research was awarded to Adolfo García-Sastredirector of the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinaí, New York (USA), for his exceptional career in the field of virology and immunology, standing out for his innovations in vaccine development and his contribution crucial to the understanding and combat of viral pathogens such as influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses of importance to human health.
Lastly, the lifetime achievement award in clinical research was delivered to Josep TaberneroHead of the Medical Oncology Service at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Director of the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), for his distinguished career and recognized leadership in the development of molecular therapies once morest cancer, as well as his contribution significant contribution to translational medicine, reflected in his extensive scientific work and his global impact on the oncology community.
To decide the winners, the jury was chaired by figures such as Vicente Estradahead of Infectious Diseases at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital; Pablo Guisadospecialist in Internal Medicine Quirónsalud Madrid University Hospital, Isabel Sola, scientist at the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC); either Ana Oakninhead of the Gynecological Cancer Program at the Vall d’Hebron Oncology Institute.
First year of activity PharmaMar Foundation
The PharmaMar Foundation, which began its activity at the beginning of this year 2023, has among its main objectives to disseminate, promote and support scientific research in the field of health, focusing especially on oncology and infectious diseases. Along these lines, during the first year of activity, the Foundation has launched various initiatives in four key areas: scientific dissemination, promotion of research, training and defense of marine biodiversity.
Among the most relevant are the sponsorship of the International Symposium on Natural Products of Marine Origin (MaNaPro), the main scientific event worldwide on natural products of marine origin; the launch of a Cycle of Scientific Conferences for all audiences, next to the Student Residence and the National Archaeological Museum; the support to Postgraduate Degree in Sarcoma from the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy at the University of Alcalá de Henares; or the impulse of several days of training for journaliststitled “Science up to date”, in different health areas for journalists, together with ANIS (National Association of Health Informants).
