Argentines and the adoption of technology in their daily life

We live in a world that does not offer a level playing field for every population. Not everyone has access to technology, yet virtually everyone already has a mobile device. Likewise, we have been hearing for decades that technology promises to be the great democratizer for societies. It is in this context that the Technology Innovation Index plays an essential role in understanding where we stand on these issues.

How do we measure the use of technological tools? The first question has to do with what applications people use, that is, how is the “prime real estate” of the screen of each user’s device, which are those that appear on their home screen and predominate.

Second, what impact do you think these apps have on your quality of life (positive, neutral or negative). After asking these questions we find fascinating results to consider.

To carry out this work, it was necessary to divide the questions into large areas of daily life: how do you communicate, how do you train, how do you educate yourself, how do you access health, how do you access information, and even what applications do you use for romantic dates? From this division we find, in the first place, that all Argentines practically use technology for communication, and within that 98% of users who have apps to communicate, 93% use WhatsApp, which is by far the most dominant tool. in all the country; it is more difficult to find a person who does not use it.

Another surprising fact is that close to 80% of people in Argentina use technology in education, and of that percentage, 60% use YouTube as their main educational platform. In this way, we can define YouTube as probably the largest school in the world, since from this app we can learn from how to make a barbecue to how to program with the Python language for beginners.

With these data, the first Innovation Index was built, which measures the percentage of the population that adopts technology applications and these improve their quality of life in practically all areas of their daily lives. The result is that 39% of Argentines adopt technological tools for all areas of their daily life and have their needs covered. 100% would be that all people in Argentina, in all their areas of life, consider that technology solves their needs.

What regarding the other 61% of the population? There are two divisions: there is a group of people who claim to be interested in technology, but who cannot find a solution that solves their problems; while there is another group that is not directly interested in these tools. Although there is still a long way to go, this is the first index that was carried out in Argentina, so it will be necessary – and we are already working – to carry out the same survey in other Latin American countries to compare.

It is important to have this information on the use of technology and the impact on the quality of life of Argentines, compared to Mexico, Brazil, Chile and other countries in the region to understand how we are as a country in this regard.

To conclude, we ask ourselves, why is it important to have an innovation index? When it comes to developing a business, making an investment or creating public policies, clearly the use of technology for communication tools is a highly covered topic for the needs of the population, but when thinking regarding productivity tools or search for employment we find a huge differential. There is a great opportunity in many niches that can benefit from the analysis of this survey, which is why we celebrate this first approach to the reality of Argentines.
