The entity specified, at the close of the day, that at least 74 percent of the electoral roll had already voted, “although the voters who are waiting for their turn will continue to vote.”

These elections have taken place normally, according to statements from various authorities in the country.

The National Service (SMN) reported this morning that part of the areas of Neuquén, Río Negro, San Luis, La Rioja, Catamarca, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Corrientes and the entire Entre Ríos are under warnings for phenomena that might be accompanied by hail fall.

However, this was not a reason to prevent voters from going to their designated electoral center. Voting in Argentina is mandatory.

More than 35 million Argentine citizens were called to participate this Sunday in the general elections that will define the new president of the South American country.

According to the information provided by the National Electoral Directorate (DNE), the polling stations would be open between 08:00 local time (11:00 GMT) until 18:00 (21:00 GMT).

On this day, voters elect the president and vice president, 24 national senators representing eight provinces, 130 national deputies throughout the country, 19 parliamentarians from the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) for the national district and 24 for the regional district .

Likewise, there are local elections in the autonomous city of Buenos Aires, province of Buenos Aires, Catamarca and Entre Ríos.

These are the five candidates who aspire to the presidency: Sergio Massa, from Unión por la Patria; Javier Milei, from Libertad Avanza; Patricia Bullrich, from Together for Change; Juan Schiaretti, from We Do for Our Country, and Myriam Bregman, from the Left Front.

After voting in his respective center, the current Argentine president Alberto Fernández indicated that he suffered “with responsibility and conviction.”

“As we celebrate 40 years of democracy, I call on every Argentine to defend it and decide the future of the country at the polls,” he expressed through his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Possible second round

The Electoral Law contemplates that if a presidential formula obtains more than 45 percent of the vote validly cast or more than 40 percent with a difference greater than ten percentage points to the second formula, they will be the elected president and vice president.

If this scenario does not occur, a second electoral round will be called for next November 19 between the two formulas with the most votes.

Preliminary results

The DNE plans to announce the first provisional results at 10:30 p.m. local time on Sunday (01:30 GMT on Monday).
