The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, sent a letter in which he made official the country’s resignation from the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), achieved this year under the mandate of outgoing president Alberto Fernández.

The BRICS leaders had announced last August the incorporation of six new countries as of January 1, 2024.

Argentina along with Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Ethiopia would become the new members, however, Milei changed plans this Friday.

“Some decisions made by the previous administration will be reviewed, among them is the creation of a specialized unit for the country’s active participation in BRICS,” says Milei’s letter addressed to the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

For this reason, the president pointed out that “in this instance The incorporation of the Argentine Republic into the BRICS is not considered appropriate as a full member as of January 1, 2024.”

However, he assured that, “without prejudice to this, I wish to highlight the commitment of my Government to the intensification of bilateral ties with your country, in particular the increase in trade and investment flows”.

“Our geopolitical alignment is the United States and Israel. We are not going to align ourselves with communists,” the libertarian had noted at that time and added: “That does not mean that the private sector can trade with whoever it wants.” .

In August, Milei’s successor, Alberto Fernández, had assured that the integration (now failed) was “a new step in the consolidation of the fraternal country open to the world that we always dreamed of being. “We are facing a great opportunity to strengthen ourselves,” she said.
