Argentina Unlocks the Dial: Breaking Down Barriers to Global Phone Number Portability

Communication service providers (CSPs) in Argentina port around 9,000 phone numbers every day. A new agreement with Argentina’s Number Portability Committee allows any company doing business in the country to access portability information to mitigate fraud, assess risks, flag money laundering risks and optimize business processes.

Mobile phone numbers are now the primary way more than 3 billion people around the world are identified when buying and selling online, opening accounts, verifying their age and authenticating at contact centers. Fraudsters are increasingly taking advantage of this preference by hijacking phone numbers to impersonate people and take over their financial accounts and make purchases in their name.

When banks, retailers, insurance companies, contact centers and other companies have access to continually updated phone number portability information, they can quickly determine whether a number has recently been ported. If it was, they may request more information from that person to see if they are a legitimate customer or a fraudster. These safeguards can also be applied to processes such as risk assessment for new customers.

“For the first time, any company will have access to accurate and continually updated Argentine portability data from a trusted and authoritative source,” said Peter Ford, executive vice president at iconectiv. “Data portability benefits all parts of an organization by providing the insights needed to proactively prevent fraud, protect customers and brand reputation, maximize operational efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance.”

Since 2012, this portability information has been available exclusively to CSPs to support business processes such as routing, classification, roaming, billing, network maintenance, and regulatory reporting. Under the new agreement with the Number Portability Committee, any company doing business in Argentina can access this authorized portability data. Approved companies may use this information to:

  • Provide your contact centers and other departments with authoritative, continually updated information to help mitigate fraud like identity theft and account takeovers, assess risks for new customers, and prevent money laundering.

  • Increase customer satisfaction and brand reputation by proactively blocking account takeovers and other fraud.

  • Minimize fraud-related expenses by handling and investigating customer concerns about suspicious activity.

In 2011, iconectiv subsidiary Administradora de la Portabilidad Argentina SA (APA) was selected to manage and verify the portability of cell phone numbers in Argentina. In 2022, the contract has been expanded to include landline number portability.
