The government of Alberto Fernández prohibited the entry into the country of the deputy of the National Assembly elected in 2020 María Iris Varela Rangel, who is accused of corruption and human rights violations.

The Chavista official, who serves as vice president of the 2020 National Assembly, took an Aerolineas Argentinas flight from Brazil, but was unable to enter because she appears on a list of people prohibited from entering.

The reason why the parliamentarian was prohibited from entering Argentina is because she was incorporated into the list of sanctioned by the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR) in 2019, during the government of Mauricio Macri. Just as it has been sanctioned since 2017 by the United States and Canada.

Iris Valera will not enter Argentina

In the statement shared by Migración Argentina, it points out that “at 3:09 in the morning, consultations with the Foreign Ministry began to ask if there was any indication that has not been communicated to this DNM regarding the prohibition of entry and circulation of this person.”

And he added: “At 5:30, the Foreign Ministry answers that the signed agreement remains in force. Migrations proceeded to verify the exit once the passenger obtained a means to return.
