Three goals in the last 15 minutes of the meeting allowed the trans-Andeans to get their direct classification for the planetary event.
In a tough game in which La Albirroja won until the 77th minute, the Albiceleste came from behind with a brace from Yamila Rodríguez, their best player in the tournament, and a free kick goal from Florencia Bon Segundo.
The Paraguayans, led by the Brazilian Marcello Frigério and who had taken the lead with an own goal from Romina Núñez, wasted the opportunity to qualify directly for their first World Cup and now they must play for the playoff spot in New Zealand in February 2023.
The players trained by Germán Portanova tried to do damage on the right with the work of Yamila Rodríguez and Soledad Jaime, who had a lot of trouble getting to the area.
La Albirroja, meanwhile, defended well in that initial stretch of the game under the leadership of veteran Hilda Riveros and her partner in defense, María Martínez.
The first clear opportunity of the game came just in the 31st minute when Núñez took a long-distance shot that was saved with solvency by the Paraguayan goalkeeper Alicia Bobadilla, who once once more ratified her good level in the tournament.
Those trained by Marcello Frigério reacted soon with a great collective move in which winger Linda Fretes sent a cross to Jessica Martínez, who took out a very strong shot that demanded Vanina Correa.
In this context, the Paraguayans found the goal at minute 38 in a corner kick in which the Argentine goalkeeper went wrong, the ball was left to Fretes who finished off badly, but was fortunate that Núñez deflected the ball to the bottom of his own goal to sentence the 0-1.
For the complementary stage, Argentina had the first opportunity to tie with a free kick by Núñez at 47 with which he once more demanded Bobadilla, who with a slap avoided the albiceleste celebration.
However, Portanova’s team lost intensity and had great difficulty in damaging Bobadilla’s goal, something that Paraguay began to take advantage of to counterattack with the help of Fabiola Sandoval and Fany Gauto, who entered the complementary part.
Precisely in one of those Jessica Martínez was regarding to increase the difference with a mid-distance shot that crashed on the horizontal at 58.
When the game looked thicker and the Paraguayans looked more comfortable Argentina’s equality arrived in a counterattack in which Rodríguez, as he had done in other games, took out a lethal shot and impossible to tackle for Bobadilla.
Portanova’s team continued to insist and made it 2-1 on a free kick, caused by a handball by Ramona Martínez, which Bonsecond charged and sent into the back of the net at minute 89 to make the entire Argentine delegation celebrate.
The team confirmed its qualification for the World Cup a minute later when Rodríguez, in another lethal counterattack, celebrated a hard-fought victory with which Argentina guaranteed its participation in a World Cup for the fourth time.
