The Argentine national team has its sights set on defending the Copa América title it won in 2021. It has already achieved its first objective of reaching the grand final of the 2024 edition and now awaits its rival, which will come from the match between Uruguay and Colombia this Wednesday.
Lionel Scaloni’s team beat Canada 2-0 on Tuesday in the first semi-final of the continental competition, which was played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Goals from Julián Álvarez and Lionel Messi, in the 22nd and 51st minutes respectively, were enough for La Albiceleste to dispatch the Canadians, who did not cause any major concern in the South American team’s goal.
It is worth noting that the 2024 Copa América final is the fourth that Argentina will play in the last five tournaments, although it was only able to win the title in the last edition in 2021.
If they win the title this time, they would achieve the milestone of the so-called “triplete” at the national team level by stringing together consecutive championships in continental tournaments with the World Cup in the middle (2022).
This feat under the same conditions has only been achieved by Spain, which won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and the Euro once more in 2012.
However, regardless of who they face, Argentina will not have an easy time defending its crown, as Uruguay and Colombia are the two best teams in the current competition.
