SANTIAGO (AP) — The Argentine Facundo Díaz Acosta and the Brazilian Laura Pigossi won the gold medals in the individual tennis tournaments at the Pan American Games on Sunday following scoring two victories in straight sets.

On the clay of the Central Court of the National Stadium, Pigossi — 125th in the women’s ranking — opened the final round with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Argentina’s María Lourdes Carlé (146th).

In the men’s final, Díaz Acosta (109 in the ATP rankings) silenced the local public by defeating Chilean Tomás Barrios (105) 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Díaz Acosta broke Barrios in the fourth game of the first set and then saved three break points in the ninth. After exchanging breaks in the second set, Díaz Acosta and Barrios went to a tiebreaker in which the Argentine overcame a 3-1 opponent to end up claiming victory.

Barrios was on the verge of gold in singles for the second straight edition at the Pan American Games. He succumbed to Brazilian Joao Menezes in the Lima 2019 final. On Saturday, Barrios took silver in the men’s doubles with Alejandro Tabilo following losing to Brazilians Gustavo Heide and Marcelo Demoline.

Pigossi’s victory was quite quick. He broke Carlé’s serve at the start and added another to win the first set. A new break in the fourth game of the second set put him on his way to victory.
