Arévalo and deputies seek a route to lift Guatemala’s suspension in the IOC

President Bernardo Arévalo summoned the deputies of the Board of Directors of Congress to present a proposal that might allow Guatemala to lift the sanction that Guatemala has before the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m. this Monday, March 4, and following 3 hours of discussion, the parliamentarians gave statements to the press.

The president of the Congress, Nery Ramos, said that this was the first approach to explore the routes that athletes can represent Guatemala in the Olympic Games, due to the suspension that is maintained by the International Olympic Committee.

He added that on Tuesday, March 5, meetings will be sought in Congress to analyze the president’s proposal and make a decision in this regard, although he did not clarify whether it was a bill or a reform.

Ramos indicated that the Congress will seek to have meetings starting Tuesday, March 5, to define the way in which they can influence to support the athletes, he even left open the possibility of listening to the position of the current president of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee, Jorge Rodas, whom the International Olympic Committee does not recognize as an Olympic authority in Guatemala.

It does not depend on a law

According to Ramos, being able to lift the suspension of Guatemala does not depend on a law. When asked if this new proposal might be approved as a matter of national urgency in Congress because the Paris Olympic Games are regarding to take place, the parliamentarian indicated that The agreed route must be discussed and the population will be informed later.

They will not negotiate with Rhodes

Deputy Samuel Pérez and other congressmen from the ruling party participated in the meeting with President Arévalo; However, different from what the president of Congress expressed regarding listening to Jorge Rodas, Deputy Pérez denied the possibility of seeking a rapprochement with the current Guatemalan Olympic Committee.

For his part, Arévalo wrote on his Twitter account: “I have met with the Board of Directors of the Congress of the Republic to coordinate actions in relation to the reform of the Sports Law, crucial to ensure that our athletes compete under the flag of Guatemala. in Paris.

“By working in coordination and for the pride of who we are, Guatemala moves forward,” concluded the president.
