Who could resist pretty fragrant and very red strawberries? These are many and varied in stores. But how to choose them? A recent study revealed the presence of many pesticides in fruits from a particular country. Without further ado, we give you more details on this information.

A German study revealed the presence of many pesticides in Spanish strawberries

It was a German study that revealed the presence of pesticides in large quantities in strawberries from Spain. These toxic products are both harmful to us and the environment.

Specifically, the fruit in question comes from the province of Huelva. The German magazine that revealed this information analyzed fourteen trays in total. Thirteen came from Spain and one from Egypt. The tests were carried out in the laboratory on a few fruits taken from each of the trays.

The results were catastrophic. Apart from a few exceptions, the many strawberries under the magnifying glass revealed a large amount of pesticides. One brand in particular shocked analysts because its fruit contained up to seven molecules different.

Toxic molecules banned in Europe

Among them, Ethirimol and Cyflumetofen. The first pesticide is a fungicide. It is used to destroy parasitic fungi. The problem is that it turns out to be very toxic to pollinating insects. In addition, this molecule is prohibited in Europe. It should therefore not be present on Spanish strawberries.

The only explanation that can justify this analysis result is the following: the pesticide initially used to treat fruit, Bupirimate, has seen its chemical composition evolve to is converted to ethirimol. Anyway, Bupirimate is also a toxic pesticide, suspected of being carcinogenic.

The German magazine also analyzed organic strawberries from Spain. Unfortunately, the results are not more encouraging. Pesticides are present with spinosad in particular. Nevertheless, the quantities do not exceed the legal limits.

Namely that this molecule, although toxic to bees, can be used in organic crops.

Crops harmful to the environment

If the pesticides found in large quantities in Spanish strawberries are harmful to our health, they are also harmful to the environment. The first victims are none other than pollinating insects.

At the same time, Spanish strawberry crops harm the planet from another point of view. Grown in very large areas, these fruits grow under huge plastic sheeting. However, the dangerousness of this material for nature no longer needs to be proven.

Finally, you should know that the production of a small kilo of strawberries requires 300 liters of water. And the province of Huelva is in Andalusia, a region where water has been lacking for several years now. To water their fields, the farmers therefore dig illegal wells which lead to the depletion of already hard-pressed reserves.
