Taiwan is drawing attention by posting a poster with cabbage kimchi to celebrate the signing of a memorandum of understanding for mutual recognition of international driver’s licenses with Korea.
On the 18th, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on its official SNS accounts such as Facebook and Instagram that it had signed a memorandum of understanding for mutual recognition of international driver’s licenses with Korea.
Accordingly, if you have an international driver’s license issued in your home country before visiting the other country, you can drive without additional procedures.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a poster with the news. Cabbage kimchi is drawn on an orange background, and a car with a license plate that reads ‘Taiwan’ is passing over the kimchi.
There was also a phrase on this poster that read ‘Kimchi kimchi’ in English. This is interpreted as correcting the claim of some Chinese netizens that the origin of kimchi is ‘pao chai’, a Chinese pickled vegetable dish.
In particular, as anti-Chinese sentiment grew in Korea, the Taiwanese government publicly stated that ‘kimchi is Korean’, and it is interpreted as part of diplomacy to win the hearts of Koreans.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “In recent years, Taiwan and South Korea have experienced significant growth in mutual exchanges such as economy, trade and tourism. Exchanges have become frequent enough to exceed 10,000 people,” he said.
“This agreement is expected to increase convenience for Koreans living in Taiwan and Taiwanese living in Korea,” he added.
