Are you sending a package abroad? Here’s what you need to know Business

It should be noted that shipping abroad is different from normal shipping. Whether it’s a business or an individual sending a package to loved ones living abroad, it’s important to do your homework and find out what requirements apply.

“First of all, when sending abroad, it is important to properly plan the time – the delivery time will be longer than when sending to Lithuania or neighboring countries. For example, when sending to Latvia, the parcel will travel in 1 working day, while it will take 4 to Ireland. Also, due to the laws of different countries, it is necessary to take care of certain documents and do not forget to check whether the items you are sending are not of limited use in the addressee’s country”, says T. Vaišvila.

Provide detailed address

Everyone knows that the package will not reach the addressee if the correct address is not specified, but when sending abroad, the recipient’s information should be extremely detailed.

“Indicate all the necessary data – name and surname of the recipient, phone number, country, city, street, house and/or apartment number. Also an important moment – don’t forget to specify the postal code. In addition, provide your details accurately – if the parcel is lost, the addressee cannot be contacted or other important information for the shipment is wrongly specified – the parcel will be returned to you”, explains the communication manager of DPD Lietuva.

Check the laws of the specific country

Please note that each country has different laws, so items that are easily available and used in Lithuania may be included in the list of restricted items in the country you are sending the package to.

“This is especially relevant when sending medicines or food supplements. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the laws of a specific country. If it is determined that the shipment contains products whose import is prohibited or restricted, the customs staff may not allow the shipment to be sent further,” asserts T. Vaišvila.

Prepare the necessary documents for shipping to non-EU countries

Another important aspect that must be paid attention to when sending international parcels is the preparation of the necessary documents.

“If you are shipping to a country outside the European Union, you will need to provide an Invoice if the goods are being sent for sale, or a Proforma Invoice if the contents of the shipment have no commercial value – are being sent for personal purposes or as gifts.” All necessary documents must be placed in a special envelope and firmly attached to each package so that they do not get lost during the entire trip. Also, don’t forget that when sending to non-EU countries, additional customs fees may be applied,” asserts the communication manager of “DPD Lietuva”.

Get insurance

It is important to understand that when sending a package abroad, it will travel a long way, so it is important to take care of insurance in case the package is lost or damaged.

Pack properly

Just as when sending in Lithuania, it is important to choose the right packaging so that the contents of the package remain safe. Especially if you are sending sensitive, breakable items.

“Make sure the packaging is the right size – it is important to ensure that there is as little empty space as possible in the box, so that the contents of the package do not move. You can fill the free space with special fillers intended for packaging – bubble wrap or paper. Also, don’t forget to mark fragile and easily breakable parcels with a special sign”, asserts DPD Lietuva’s communication manager.
