Are you anxious? Here is the breathing technique that will relax you, it’s science that says it

More and more French people are anxious. In effect, month of January, known to be a difficult time of year, can become stressful for many of us. If you know different breathing techniques, here is one that has proven itself. In fact, the review Cell Reports Medecine published a study on January 10 on the stunning results of a breathing method. An experiment was thus conducted by researchers at Stanford University in California. They wanted to test different methods of respiration and one of them has proven itself.

The real method to be able to free yourself from anxiety

For this, they followed no less than 108 participants for a month. These guinea pigs had the objective of carrying out an exercise every day and noting their feedback such as their mood, their heart rate, their respiratory rate, or the quality of their sleep. Divided into four groups, they had to perform four different methods. And the first had encouraging results. Indeed, the students who had to meditate by practicing the cyclic sigh, that is to say more pronounced exhalations. “Breathing, especially the cyclical sigh, is more effective at increasing positive affect than mindfulness meditation”note the authors.

And it’s all backed up by science. “Since cardiac and pulmonary functions are tightly synchronized, and cardiac vagal control has been conceptualized as a marker of emotional control, respiration may directly influence the central autonomic network”brain and spinal cord, “and therefore may explain the impact of breathing on mood and sleep.” For its part, the meditation Mindfulness helps manage stress, as other researchers have proven, but the effects are visible in the longer term.
