Are penile fractures (really) more numerous at Christmas?

2023-12-23 05:30:00

What if there was a seasonality for penile fracture? In any case, this is what the results of an epidemiological study carried out by urologists in Munich (Germany) suggest. Between 2005 and 2021, scientists have noted an increase in the number of penile fractures.
This is a rupture of the corpora cavernosa of the penis during erection. Penile fracture is a rare urological emergency, which most often occurs during sexual intercourse. Generally, it manifests itself by a cracking sound, pain and the appearance of a hematoma.

This study was carried out using data from admission registers from a single country, Germany. 3,421 men – with a median age of 42 years – stayed in hospital due to a penile fracture between 2005 and 2021. In total, 40 similar incidents were recorded between the 24th, 25th and 26th December. These findings were published in the December 2023 issue of the journal BJU International.

“A total of 40 (1.2%) penile fractures occurred within the 51 days of Christmas (December 24-26 each year). The daily incidence of penile fractures at Christmas was 0.78 with an incidence rate ratio of 1.43,” the authors detail. And to summarize: “The incidence of penile fractures shows seasonality. Last Christmas, penile fractures were more common. »

Beware of Saturday night sex

Another learning from this analysis, only 28% of these fractures were reported during the New Year period where the incidence is 0.58 cases per day. “Our results demonstrate seasonality in the occurrence of penile fractures. Christmas, weekends and summer were associated with a statistically significant increase in the daily incidence of penile fractures,” summarize the study authors. According to the researchers, the confinement period and the global Covid-19 epidemic had no impact on the frequency of these injuries.

According to the German authors, patients are also more frequently admitted on weekend days for this reason. “Men who have sex on Saturday evening are the most exposed to penile fractures, followed by those who have sex on Friday evening,” the authors point out. Concerning the different months of the year, cases are most numerous during the summer months. Precisely, it was the month of June that had the highest incidence of penile fractures with a daily incidence of 0.62. This figure drops to 0.48 for the month of March.

The authors highlight certain limitations of their study such as possible errors linked to administrative data or delays between the date of the accident and the date of admission. “According to our analyses, penile fractures occur during periods when couples enjoy relaxing times, such as Christmas, weekends and summer. Although we cannot, of course, advise once morest having sex during these periods, our findings sound the alarm – and not the bells,” the scientists write with humor in the study conclusions.
