Committed – like France and Switzerland – to the race for the 2030 Games, Sweden is currently refining its arguments in order to be able to present its concept to the Future Host Commission established by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in November 2023. ).
With this in mind, the Swedish sports authorities were recently able to be satisfied with the support expressed by three municipalities which are associated with the candidacy and which will be included in the implementation of a possible project in the event of formal designation by the institution Olympic.
In fact, Åre, Falun and Östersund signed the guarantees necessary for their respective participation, symbolizing the attachment of each of them to Sweden’s Olympic and Paralympic goals, these three cities having all had the opportunity to national colors in previous applications.
Above all, the support expressed by these three territories brings an additional stone to a building which now awaits decisive support from the government, in addition of course to that of the City of Stockholm.
This expectation – which is reminiscent of the weak position in which the candidacy for the 2026 Olympics found itself a few weeks before the IOC vote – was recently highlighted by the Director of the Sports Department of the Latvian Ministry of Defense. ‘Education and Sciences, Vladimirs Steinbergs. The latter then took advantage of an interview to raise the prospect of hosting the Games between Sweden and Latvia, the latter being ready to mobilize in preparations which should involve the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton track. of Sigulda, with planned upgrade works worth 58 million euros.
Beyond the aforementioned foreign option – already proposed during the Swedish candidacy for 2026 – the concept of the 2030 Games is structured around four territorial poles, as was put forward as part of the conclusions of the preliminary study revealed in June.
Concretely, Stockholm, Åre, Falun and Östersund would constitute the organizing sectors of the Games, with the desire to maximize existing infrastructures and to capitalize on the experience acquired over the years in the establishment of major events linked to international sports. ‘winter.
As such, four existing arenas have been identified in the Swedish capital and its surroundings for ice events, namely the Tele2 Arena (30 000 places), l’Avicii Arena (14,000 places) – otherwise known as the Globe -, the rink Scaniarinken of Södertälje (6,200 places), without forgetting also the Friends Arena in Solna (50 to 55,000 seats) for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.
In terms of snow sports, Åre – Stockholm’s ally for 2026 – would offer suitable conditions to host the alpine skiing, freestyle and snowboarding events during the Olympic Games, before hosting the alpine para-skiing and para-snowboard during the Paralympic Games.
Concerning Falun, the Ski stadium – where the Nordic World Ski Championships will take place in 2027 – is intended to host ski jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined events.
Finally, as for Östersund and its surroundings, the existing sites would be capable of allowing the organization of biathlon events during the Olympic Games, then para-cross-country skiing and para-biathlon competitions during the Paralympic Games.
