For many, it is not easy to swap a good dose of soda for a simple glass of water. In order not to do without this carbonated thirst-quenching sensation with a sweet note, many opt instead for an alternative that seems to be healthier: that of the so-called light version. But is it really as healthy as we think? Researchers from the University of São Paulo in Brazil looked into the question and the results left something to be desired.
What difference does drinking diet soda make?
Scientists tested diet and regular sodas to determine their effects. To do this, they also observed the effects of mineral water with artificial sweeteners, but also of simple plain water or even added to a small quantity of sucrose. Fifteen participants then ingested the substances and saliva samples made it possible to make an observation concerning the levels of insulin or even aspartame. Result ? Aspartame stays in the body longer than expected. “First, the samples detected aspartame in saliva for an extended period of time. This indicates that the artificial sweetener remains in the body for a long time, which may impact the body’s response to the sweetener”, reveals the New-York Post. “Higher salivary insulin levels were observed following ingestion of regular and diet soft drinks compared to ingestion of tested low-sucrose drinks and water”, also explains the study.
What solutions are available to us?
To avoid exposing ourselves to the harmful effects of these components contained in these drinks, we must first regulate our consumption. However, if the desire for a refreshing and sweet drink arises, you can always prepare a little homemade cocktail. In this way, we can regulate the sugar level or even replace it with agave syrup, yacon syrup or even stevia.
