Are complications after vaccination against COVID-19 not registered in Lithuania?

Nevertheless, the comments of the user of the social network “X” (formerly “Twitter”) about the order in force in Lithuania returned to our country in the form of a conspiracy theory.

Stumbled upon an old point

“For the sake of all of us, I would very much like to believe that there is some kind of scientific, rational explanation for this point, which I underlined in red, in the minister’s order,” A. Veryga wrote on his Facebook account a week ago. – I haven’t found him yet.

And, to be honest, I don’t even have any logically explainable version, except that something is simply not wanted to be registered…”

Member of the Seimas together shared a screenshot of a couple of points from the order of the Minister of Health. November 3rd were publishedand the next day some of his went into effect changes.

The screenshot shows items 23 and 24 from Chapter VI of the order “Registration of complications after vaccinations and provision of information about them”.

The first point states that complications after vaccination or vaccination with specific immunoglobulins and serums are registered at the National Public Health Center (NVSC).

“The doctor who diagnosed complications after vaccination (except when the complications were diagnosed after vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine) fills in the Adverse Reactions to Vaccines study protocol and within 15 calendar days of the diagnosis of the complication after vaccination (if the complication after vaccination caused a risk of life or death, – within 1 calendar day) is sent in writing to the NVSC,” the next point reads.

A. Veryga underlined part of the first sentence of this point: “The doctor who diagnosed complications after vaccination (except when the complications were diagnosed after vaccination with the COVID-19 disease vaccine)”, thus assuming that data on these complications are not being collected now. It was precisely this phrase that he commented on.

Spotted way to ‘make COVID vaccines safe’

The post of the ex-minister on the social network Facebook a week ago could only remain a small dissatisfaction with the decisions of the successor. It’s funny that A. Veryga’s comment didn’t cause a big discussion: in almost a week, more than 170 people reacted, more than 30 shared, but only 4 commented.

But three days earlier, a post on how to register complications was posted by X user Steve Kirsch, introducing himself truth teller, critical thinker, COVID-19 Early Treatment Fund (CETF, English: COVID-19 Early Treatment Fund), founder, representative of the Vaccine Safety Research Foundation, entrepreneur, philanthropist and environmentalist.

“This is not a joke. It sounds like a joke, but it’s true, and I have the documents to prove it.” comment started by a man living in California. In 10 days, his post was read 1 million times. times.

S. Kirsch announced with a dose of irony that “Lithuania has come up with an excellent method to make COVID vaccines safe”.

He then explained the changes in the registration of side effects caused by vaccines in recent years: “By 2021 October 29 doctors were obliged to inform the Lithuanian State Drug Control Service (VVKT) about the side effects of absolutely all vaccines.”

Then, according to him, the minister’s order “On registering complications after vaccination and providing information about them” was changed: “From 2021 October 30 Lithuanian doctors were prohibited from reporting post-vaccination complications of COVID vaccines.

From 2021 October 30 Lithuanian doctors are still required to report post-vaccination complications of all vaccines, except for COVID vaccines.

Doctors simply cannot report post-vaccination complications of COVID vaccines, but they must report side effects of all other vaccines.

It is likely that other countries will copy this important method,” he explained, even blacking out some places.

Some vaccine skeptics from Lithuania drew attention to this information. Just one shared Screenshots of S.Kirsch’s record and the cited order point. Although the texts are not identical, it seems that Internet users just copied from each otherbecause the same mistakes remain (“note”, “tweeter” instead of “twitter”).

Others have added their own comments, for example: “The main question is: What is the purpose of issuing such instructions? When you answer to yourself, you start to understand what’s going on.”

Registers, but others

In a comment provided by SAM to the portal 15min is stated differently than the ex-minister and social network users interpret.

“Reports on suspected adverse reactions (SARs) to medicinal products, including vaccines, are registered by VVKT. At the same time, reports of adverse reactions to vaccines are also registered by the NVSC, which is responsible for the management of communicable diseases.

Such duplication of functions led to an increased administrative burden for both personal health care facilities and registration authorities during the period of mass vaccination against the COVID-19 disease.

For this reason, in 2021 the decision of the Minister of Health was made that reports on adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines are registered by one institution – VVKT”, the ministry explained.

According to the SAM, in order to abandon duplicate functions and reduce the administrative burden for both treatment and public administration institutions, it will be proposed to leave reports on adverse reactions to vaccines and medicinal products solely within the competence of the VVKT. For this purpose, a working group has already been created in the ministry, which will prepare relevant amendments to legal acts.

Not only health care professionals, but also the residents themselves can report adverse reactions to medicinal products to VVKT. This can be done electronically or by phone, information about it can be found here.

VVKK states that it received 2,003 reports of suspected adverse reactions to medicines and vaccines (ADRs) last year.

The number of notifications has decreased by 380% compared to 2021. (5,606 posts). Last year, there were a lot of reports about the start of vaccination against the coronavirus. Vaccination slowed down last year, so the number of reports of CNR received by VVKT decreased accordingly.

But in 2022 still a large proportion (61%) were reports of CNRs after vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines.

15min verdict: missing context. In Lithuania, all suspected adverse reactions to vaccines (including from COVID-19) and medicinal products are registered. In order to reduce the administrative burden on the NVSC, the registration of side effects to the coronavirus vaccines was transferred to the VVKT.
