“The best chip shop” returns for a new season starting this Thursday evening. Behind the competition, there is also an economic reality. More and more Belgians are frequenting fritkots. While only 45% went there once a month in 2013, there are now 61%.

A full-fledged heritage tradition in the country, chip shops hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of Belgians. But are there more and more of them here?

The figure remains stable: 4,642 chip shops throughout Belgium, according to the president of the union of friturists, Bernard Lefèvre.

During covid, new chip shops opened, but these establishments are to be restored in the majority. A failure which can be explained by the lack of awareness of the reality of the profession by the neophytes who started out.

The president of the friturists’ union concludes by saying that business is going well, but not better.

To lovers of fries, he gives this advice: don’t eat fries all the time, but when you do, eat good ones! And therefore in a chip shop which no longer needs to prove itself.
