ARD and ZDF’s Response to Iran’s Attack on Israel: Criticism and Controversy Unveiled

Iran is attacking Israel with hundreds of killer drones and missiles – and how do ARD and ZDF react? Not at all…

While international TV channels such as BBC or CNN interrupt their current programs, Kai Pflaume (56) and his guessing session in “Who knows something like that?” can still be seen on ARD.

Criticism of this even comes from within our own ranks! “Monitor” boss Georg Restle wrote ironically on #Program Mission.”

Volker Beck, ex-Green Party politician and head of the German-Israeli Society (DIG) wrote on X: “@WeltTV is already broadcasting about the Iranians’ escalation in the war against Israel. @tagesschau24 & @phoenix_de still canned. I expect more.” And publicist Murat Kaymann asked: “What do we actually pay broadcasting fees for if ARD and ZDF are not capable of short-term special programs on a night like this?”

But there was also clear criticism of what was then seen on the public news programs after the quiz show ended.

▶︎ On ZDF they said “Tel Aviv reports…” – even though the Israeli government is based in Jerusalem.

▶︎ In the ARD Tagesthemen, presenter Ingo Zamperoni (49) greeted his viewers with the words: “It must have been very clear to those responsible in Israel that this incident would not remain without consequences…”

Zamperoni justifies Iran’s attack with the fact that Israel had previously attacked the Iranian consulate in Syria in a military strike, killing officers of the mullahs’ regime – instead of making it clear that the destruction of Israel has been a kind of “reason of state” for Iran since 1979 is, for example, preached every morning in school.

“This sentence suggests that Israel provoked Iran’s attack today,” criticizes the media blog “ÖRR Antisemitism Watch” at X. Zamperoni is saying that Israel “is somehow ‘itself to blame’ for the Iranian attack.” Many users commented on the post, writing, among other things, about “perpetrator-victim reversal”.

What do the broadcasters say? ZDF spokeswoman Sabine Dreher: “ZDF provided up-to-date and comprehensive information about the Iranian attack on Israel in its digital information service ‘ZDFheute’ and in its news broadcasts. By displaying a crawl, the TV audience was informed of the extended ‘heute journal’ at 10:45 p.m..”

The ARD also points out its “crawls” (meaning text ticker tapes). Press spokeswoman Tabea Werner: “We had numerous crawls with clues in the program on Saturday. We also reported extensively on Iran’s attack on Israel in the daily topics.”

The ARD spokeswoman does not want to say anything about the criticism of Ingo Zamperoni’s choice of words, but refers to the responsible NDR in Hamburg. There, the ARD editorial team responded to the BILD request: “The moderation shows that an attack by Iran had been expected for days and does not represent an assessment.”
