Architectural gem for millions suffering silent death

It is the Havnebadet on the harbor front that is being stripped down in these and the coming days.

– Right now, our contractor on the demolition of the harbor bath is in the process of removing everything that is above water. We then expect that the last thing that will happen is that the anchoring piles on which the harbor pool has rested underwater will be removed in the days between 12 and 16 August. Then we are ready to go towards the ships coming to the Aalborg Regatta, says city gardener Kirsten Lund Andersen, Aalborg Municipality.

Aalborg Regatta runs from August 21 to 25, so the work on removing the harbor bath must be over.

Since the city council decided in 2022 for financial reasons to close the harbor bath permanently at Jomfru Ane Parken, it has stood empty and awaited its further fate.

At the moment, an employee from the company Vesta Fjord goes and removes, among other things, the large quantities of insulation materials that are in the building.

Vesta Fjord is a subcontractor for Munck Havne & Anlæg, which has the contract to demolish the dilapidated harbor pool.

– All the innards have gradually been peeled out, and it has largely succeeded in getting the insulation reused, says carpenter Christian Frederiksen from Vesta Fjord.

According to Nordjyske’s information, all the many pontoons that have supported the construction have been sold on for use in other maritime facilities.

Kirsten Lund Andersen can confirm that there has been great interest in the pontoons, but she is not completely up to date on their sales.

– In the coming time, the pontoons will be sailed to Tunnelhavnen, from where they will be transported on to their new destinations, says Christian Frederiksen.

At the beginning of next week, a floating barge will arrive with a crane and claw, which will remove all the external woodwork above water, and by mid-August the harbor pool should have finally disappeared from the surface of the fjord.

The architect-designed harbor bath was built in 2011 at a cost of between DKK 12 and 13 million with million-dollar support from, among others, the Local and Infrastructure Fund.

Over the years, Havnebadet ran into a number of challenges – i.a. there were occasionally rats in the water and several times the bath also had to be closed due to too many bacteria in the water.

This has led to more and more people choosing the open-air bath at Vestre Fjordpark for a dip rather than the harbor bath, which was eventually used by quite a few guests.

In 2022, it was decided to try to sell the harbor bath, because there was a bill in the region of four million kroner waiting for a renovation of the bath, which had eventually ended up in poor condition.

Aalborg Municipality has tried to sell the harbor bath as a whole, but it has not yielded results and now it is being dismantled – with a bill of up to three million kroner for the demolition.
