Patras, Achaia and Western Greece are on the final stretch to welcome the first foreign visitors of this year’s tourist season to Araxos airport.
The arrivals, in fact, will begin with a special ceremony next month, as on April 16 the Olympic Flame lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia is scheduled, which will bring the president of the International Olympic Committee and many more “Immortals” to our country. The high-profile arrivals are scheduled for April 15, with the reception in Araxos by the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Karpalos and the airport master Giorgos Gouvitsa. The departure of the “Immortals” of the IOC will take place in the late afternoon of the following day immediately after the Afi events.
One understands that all of the above proves the importance of the operation of the airport for the wider region, with the mass arrivals of tourists expected shortly before Easter. Specifically, on May Day we will have the first two flights for this year’s tourist season, with the first visitors coming from Romania, while on Good Friday (May 3) three flights from Germany will land in Araxos.
Based on the information so far, the countries from which the flights to Araxos will originate in the coming months will be those of the Baltic (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia), Poland, Romania and Germany, with tourists from the last country to board at five airports (Munich, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hanover).
The airport master of Araxos, Giorgos Gouvitsas, told “Peloponnisos” that the full program will be ready next week and reiterated that no tourists from Russia and Ukraine are expected this year because of the war. At the same time, he announced that tourists from Israel will also be absent (there are already many cancellations) due to the war situation in Gaza. “Last season we saw around 143,000 citizens moving to and from Araxos airport.
“We hope that the arrivals and departures will fluctuate at the same levels as last year,” said Mr. Gouvitsas, for the last season before he retires.
