Former number 1 in women’s tennis, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, has been sentenced to two years in prison for fraud. According to a court’s ruling in Barcelona on Wednesday, the 52-year-old Spaniard does not have to go to prison because she does not have a criminal record.
She and her ex-husband Josep Santacana were accused of hiding assets to avoid having to pay off multi-million euro debts to the Banque de Luxembourg.
Fine of 6.6 million euros
Sánchez Vicario reached an agreement with prosecutors last year to get a reduced sentence by admitting guilt. Her ex-husband Santacana received a prison sentence of three years and three months. Both have to pay a fine of 6.6 million euros.
Sánchez Vicario won the French Open tennis tournament in 1989, 1994 and 1998. In 1994 she won the US Open. In her career, she has earned around $17 million in prize money. She ended her career in 2002.
