Stellantis, the automaker, has found that 24 European car engines sold since 2014, equivalent to around 28 million vehicles, are ready to use advanced synthetic fuel without any modification to the transmission technology, following months of testing at its centers. Technology across Europe, where tests were conducted using alternative synthetic fuels developed by Saudi Aramco.

A low-carbon synthetic fuel is a type of fuel that is made by reacting carbon dioxide, captured directly from the atmosphere or from an industrial facility, with renewable hydrogen. Low-carbon synthetic fuels have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from internal combustion vehicles. current by at least 70% during its operating cycle, compared to conventional fuels.

Saudi Aramco’s chief transportation technician, Amer Al-Amer, explained that working with Stellantis to evaluate the performance of Saudi Aramco’s fuel formulations that are designed to represent the expected synthetic fuel properties in the engines of its cars, that the test results show that synthetic fuels can become An easy-to-use solution in existing vehicles, and when produced via a low-carbon path, it can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector and supporting an orderly energy transition, according to SPA.

Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Ned Couric, explained that the company’s priorities are to provide zero-emissions mobility with a focus on electric cars, and cooperation with Saudi Aramco is an important and complementary step in this journey, and these solutions reinforce our ambitious strategy of becoming a zero-emissions company. carbon by 2038.

He added that the available synthetic fuels can have a massive and immediate impact on reducing the carbon dioxide emissions of the current fleet of vehicles, providing an easy and economically feasible option that contributes to reducing carbon emissions.

He pointed out that Stellantis aims, through its long-term strategic plan, to halve its carbon emissions by 2030, according to 2021 standards, and to achieve zero neutrality by 2038, as the company estimates that the use of low-carbon e-fuels in regarding 28 million Its compounds might reduce up to 400 million tons of carbon dioxide in Europe between 2025 and 2050.

Alternative synthetic fuel testing by Stellantis covers exhaust emissions, operability, engine power, reliability and endurance, oil mitigation, fuel tank, fuel lines and filters, as well as fuel performance in hot and cold temperatures.

Saudi Aramco is currently establishing two pilot plants to explore the production of low-carbon synthetic fuels, and is also working with Inowa (NEOM Energy and Water Company) in the Kingdom to produce synthetic gasoline for light passenger cars.

Saudi Aramco and Repsol in Bilbao, Spain, are exploring opportunities to produce low-carbon synthetic diesel, aviation and automotive fuels, as well as working with motorsports teams and competition organizers to conduct further testing and demonstrate the potential of low-carbon fuels as a direct solution to reducing carbon emissions from vehicles with internal combustion engines. .
