APWorks installs multilaser AM system from Farsoon

At the close of 2023, Farsoon has installed a multilaser 3D metal printing system at the German APWorks. With this, APWorks will serially print parts in Scalmalloy, the strong, lightweight aluminum alloy developed in-house. Scalmalloy is a replacement for the aluminum 7000 alloy.

This concerns the FS422M-4 system from the Chinese manufacturer. This is an LPBF system with a construction chamber of 425 by 425 by 560 mm equipped with four lasers. APWorks chose this type partly because of the productivity that the Farsoon machine offers. “We believe it will allow us to scale up our production of high-quality Scalmalloy parts in the most economical way possible,” said Jon Meyer, CEO of the German AM company.

Farsoon now has more than 1,000 installed industrial AM systems, both for metal and plastics. In Europe, the Chinese group operates from its own branch in Stuttgart.

Applications become economically feasible

APWorks, a spin-off of Airbus in Munich, has further developed several applications for series production in recent years. Jon Meyer thinks that the Total Cost of Ownership linked to the productivity of the Farsoon metal printer is the biggest asset for the supplier. “This allows us to focus on applications that were previously not economically attractive.” APWorks therefore expects to be able to develop more applications for 3D metal printing. APWorks now also works for clients in other industry segments, such as defense, luxury automotive and the sports industry.

Develop new applications

The two companies want to further collaborate to develop new applications in the aviation industry for Scalmalloy.
